We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget question is coming to us from Sang-Jung, who is desperately in search of the perfect cordless critter to take some of the strain away from that trackpad."I'm heading to university next year, and I've purchased a MacBook. PSPgo packs a 480MHz processor, probably not crossing 333MHz mark 2 July 2009, 6:01 pm
Officially, Sony's PSPgo is only clocking in at 333MHz like the rest of its brothers and sisters, but as the gang at Sony Insider found out in the FCC filing, the internal processor actually maxes out at 480MHz. What that means for gamers is probably nothing in the near future, since the firmware'll underclock it to standard speeds and we've seen absolutely no sign Sony's interested in releasing software exclusively for the UMD-less iteration at this point. Of course, the opportunity to capital...

Archos 9 Windows 7 tablet does a little hands-on time 2 July 2009, 5:16 pm
Looks like the Archos 9 Windows 7 tablet has made it out of the labs (and controlled show floor settings) and into the hands of Crave UK, where that seemingly-amazing resistive touchscreen continues to impress -- so much so that they initially thought it was a capacitive unit. We actually pinged Crave ed Nate Lanxon to find out what was up, and the real story appears to be a mystery -- either Archos PR is mistaken in telling everyone that it's a resistive screen, or the company has somehow impr...

LG eyes number two phone maker spot for 2012, premium brand in the works 2 July 2009, 4:25 pm
Sitting pretty as the number three cell maker in the world would make many of the bigger names happy -- not to mention the usurped Sony Ericsson and Motorola a bit green -- but not LG, as it's now gunning for spot number two. In an interview with Yonhap, LG's president of its mobile business, Ahn Seung-kwon, stated that the company hoped to bump Samsung to the wayside by 2012 with the help of a serious new set and a premium brand. While the gaudiness of really expensive handsets disturbs us at t...

Sega Toys makes indoor fireworks infinitely safer, to Elvis Costello's dismay 2 July 2009, 3:44 pm
Lovers of pyrotechnics everywhere have always struggled with the quandary: what to do on a rainy day? Well, firebugs, get a load of this: Sega Toys Japan has heard your prayers and answered 'em in the form of the Uchiage Hanabi. This is essentially a projector that displays "fireworks" on the walls and ceilings, with realistic movement and sound. And if that weren't enough, you can create your own fireworks and program your own shows. Now you can have Bastille Day, every day, in the privacy of ...

Tiny, printable batteries promise to change the face of obnoxious greeting cards forever 2 July 2009, 3:10 pm
Researchers at the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS in Chemnitz led by Prof. Dr. Reinhard Baumann have unveiled tiny, printable batteries that they hope to put into production for pennies apiece. The new battery prototype is primarily composed of a zinc anode and a manganese cathode that can be screen printed and covered with a non-printed template cover. Each mercury-free battery weighs less than one gram, and can individually produce about 1.5 volts of electric...

iPhone facing potential trademark issues in China? 2 July 2009, 2:34 pm
Apple's on-again, off-again deal with China Unicom to officially bring the iPhone to China may still be up in the air, but it looks like it could now also be facing some trademark issues that could potentially further hold up its release. Apparently, China's Hanwang Technology owns the trademark for "i-phone" in the country, which could force Apple to make a deal with 'em before it enters the market (sound familiar?). Interestingly, Apple does actually own an "iPhone" trademark in China, but it...

'Asteroids' heading towards the big screen? 2 July 2009, 2:03 pm
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal has won an all-out "bidding war" over the film rights to Atari's classic Asteroids video game. We're not entirely sure who all was involved in this "war," but the conflict couldn't possibly be prompted over the universal themes tackled by the story of the plucky little triangular spaceship and the asteroid field it inhabits. As the Reporter, um, reports: "As opposed to today's games, there is no story line or fancy world-building mythology." Michae...

Sony exec says UMD-less PSP was "always the plan" 2 July 2009, 1:39 pm
Well, it's no secret that plenty of folks have been talking about a UMD-less PSP since day one, but it looks like that's been the case behind the scenes at Sony as well, at least according to the company's head of product planning, Naoya Matsui. Speaking with GameBusiness.jp, he said that Sony has "planned to release a PSP model without a UMD drive since the very beginning," but that if "we'd simply released the hardware, there wouldn't have been much for everyone to enjoy," adding that Sony "n...

Loaded with a variety of multicolored LEDs, you can change the hue of the luminotherapy bed with the touch of a remote. Self-Portrait Machine Forces Your Hands Into Drawing a Pretty Picture [Robots] 2 July 2009, 5:00 pm
No artistic ability? Let a friendly robot force your hands into drawing a realistic self-portrait of yourself. Jen Hui Lia's Self-Portrait Machine takes your picture and then guides your hands into drawing your own portrait. You slip your wrists and index fingers into the straps, hold a pen and the machine does the rest. It's sort of gimmicky now, sure, but imagine the next generation of this thing: instead of a picture as the source, it uses your brainwaves to put down whatever you're picturing...

Apple's Future iPhone Patents Show Fingerprint ID For Different Gestures, Plus More [Patent] 2 July 2009, 4:54 pm
MacRumors found three interesting patents that point to various new interaction techniques. The most interesting is the fingerprint ID directly on the screen so that the iPhone can see which finger you're using and accept gestures appropriately. The fingerprint ID also, of course, can theoretically act as a security device so that only you can activate your phone. There's also haptic (physical) feedback when you're hitting things, as well as using the touchscreen as an RFID reader. None of the t...

LG Making iPhone Competitor, Android Phone and Prada III [Lg] 2 July 2009, 4:30 pm
It would be amazing if LG could make an iPhone competitor, an Android device and a Prada III that's one single device, but somehow I don't think that's what LG's president means. In an interview for a Korean news agency, Ahn Seung-kwon says (besides the details above) that LG will make another luxury phone (unrelated to the Prada) that will be similar to Nokia's crazy overpriced Vertu. He also said that they aim to be the number two cellphone maker in the world by 2012. The current #2? Samsung. ...

Land Rover S1 Phone Tested By Elephants: It Really Is The Strongest Phone [Cellphones] 2 July 2009, 4:00 pm
This is why the Sonim/Land Rover S1 phone is the toughest phone yet: it can stand an elephant stomp, being run over an actual Land Rover and being tossed out of a second floor window. Plus... ...it was dunked in mud, put inside a 300 degree oven, and soaked in beer. What finally did it in is being crushed by a three ton forklift, which is pretty above and beyond the duty of any phone we'd normally use. As for the specs, it has 1500 hours of battery (standby or talk, we're not sure) and a 2-megap...

Magnetic Big Wheel or Ring of Death? [Cars] 2 July 2009, 3:30 pm
Car designer Harsha Vardhan has a different vision of tomorrow. While his vehicle calls for an electric engine, just like we see in cars now like the Prius or Volt, that engine drives magnetic fields, not wheels. (The magnetic fields, of course, do eventually drive the wheels forward when the energy is transferred from over superconducting fluid that touches the rims.) The result is, theoretically, a very smooth and quiet ride with a low environmental impact. We just like the design for its neat...

Robo-Geisha Invade Theaters With Chainsaws, Butt Blades and Fried Shrimp [Nsfw] 2 July 2009, 3:00 pm
If fembots were viciously cultured Japanese escorts instead of just ditsy blondes, Austin Powers would not have lived to make The Love Guru. (Tagged NSFW for crude violence and PG13 T&A) This preview for Robo Geisha captures a world in which geisha are robotic assassins, super villains shoot rockets from wheelchairs, giant robots make buildings bleed and assassins sometimes sustain inconvenient anal injuries by way of panty katana. The film is expected to hit (Japan's?) theaters this fall. If a...

Phone ringtones a "public performance"? EFF, AT&T say no 2 July 2009, 6:49 pm
It isn't often that you find AT&T and the Electronic Frontier Foundation in agreement, but consensus has been reached on one matter: ASCAP's demand that wireless companies pay it license fees for ringtones is, well, ridiculous. On Wednesday EFF called the move "outlandish" and "a ploy to squeeze more money out of the mobile phone companies." The advocacy group filed a friend of the court brief with the United States District Court for the Southern District New York this week...

"MySpace mom" Lori Drew's conviction thrown out 2 July 2009, 3:31 pm
"MySpace mom" Lori Drew has had her misdemeanor guilty verdict overturned by the federal judge handling the case, the LA Times reports. Violating a website's terms of use is not, it seems, a federal crime after all.
Horrible things aren't always crimes
The guilty verdict against Lori Drew, prosecutors crowed, would send an "overwhelming message" to online bullies. Though she escaped conviction on felony charges, the 49-year-old Missouri mom could have still faced three years...

Windows 7 Home Premium to get Family Pack deal 2 July 2009, 1:48 pm
One of the recently leaked builds of Windows 7 has more juice in it than just a new default wallpaper. In the Windows 7 Home Premium edition—as noticed by Kristan Kenney—, the Microsoft Software License Terms has an additional clause that mentions a Family Pack licensing plan that would cover up to three computers in a household. This is no accident: other editions like Professional and Ultimate do not contain the Family Pack wording. Here's the whole clause:

Behavioral advertisers discover the self-regulation gospel 2 July 2009, 12:13 pm
Behavioral advertising, in which users are fed ads based on the interests revealed by their Web browsing habits, has an obvious appeal to advertisers, as it will ostensibly allow them to serve ads to the most relevant audiences. It also raises a host of privacy concerns—to work effectively, the Web surfing histories of consumers have to be aggregated and analyzed by those providing the ads. Both the Federal Trade Commission and Congress have asked questions about whe...

Assaulted by someone you met online? Don't sue the website 2 July 2009, 10:44 am

The court was asked to review the case of four underage girls (referred to as Julie Does) who, along with their parents, had sued MySpace for gross negligence and strict product liability after they were all sexually assaulted by older men whom they met on the service. Universal to bring Asteroids to theaters 2 July 2009, 9:51 am
Once again, news has arrived from the land of Hollywood that another major video game franchise is being adapted for the silver screen. Last week, it was announced that Uncharted would get a celluloid makeover; this week, it's a much older franchise that's being adapted. It turns out that Asteroids, the Atari game from 1979 (thus making it older than many in the current generation of gamers) will be coming to theaters sometime in the future.
Astonishingly, not only is Asteroids...

Mozilla officially released Firefox 3.5 on Tuesday. The new version of the popular open source web browser has attracted considerable attention and is already seeing rapid adoption. It was downloaded over 5 million times during the first 24 hours. This falls short of the record-setting 8 million downloads that Firefox 3 had during its first day, but it still reflects the intense enthusiasm of the browser's fans.

After having surveyed terrain administered by the Bureau of Land Management, the DOI has identified the best sites for solar facilities. It will now withdraw these areas from consideration for other uses and undertake a single environmental review for all of them. Assuming their use for solar power producti...

New Linux patch could circumvent Microsoft's FAT patents 1 July 2009, 8:52 pm
Microsoft's recent lawsuit against TomTom, alleging infringement of filesystem patents, has left many questions unanswered about the legal implications of distributing open source implementations of Microsoft's FAT filesystem. A new Linux kernel patch that was published last week offers a workaround that might make it possible to continue including FAT in Linux without using methods that are covered by Microsoft's patents.
The patent dispute erupted in February when Microsoft su...

Since March, Biden has talked, usually in conference calls, to dozens of mayors and 47 of the 50 state governors about the Recovery Act. The three governors who have not yet been on the line, thoug...

Health Care Rationing is Here 2 July 2009, 5:20 pm
The debate on the health care bill is so often snagged on talking points that have been around since Truman. A government health care plan will lead to bureaucrats rationing our health care! "I don't think many Americans want to start having to wait in line [or] start getting government permission for procedures," Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said last month on CBS's Face the Nation. All too often, reporters are willing to accept that hoary old chestnut as the end of the discussi...

Citi Gives GE The Heisman 2 July 2009, 10:46 am
Faced with the possibility of unloading all or part of its credit card business, Vik and the boys decided they were not going to accept any low-ball offers from the likes of Jeff Immelt. While contemplating either an outright sale of the unit to GE or joining their credit card operations in a joint venture, Citi wanted a premium for its branded and private label cards. As delinquency rates head towards multi-decade highs, this seems like perfect timing for Citi to rely on its ability to raise ra...

Alec Baldwin Takes Issue With Madoff Sentencing 2 July 2009, 9:33 am
Noted legal scholar Alec Baldwin has popped in to the Huffington Post to put it out there that he thinks 150 years is bull. Bernie should be given a reduced sentence in exchange for answering every question investigators ask regarding where the money is, naming names and telling them what his recommendations are "for how this might be detected and/or prevented in the future." Of course, Baldy's not necessarily wrong, but we'd still like to hear what Stephen's thoughts are on the matter before ...

Bank CEOs Have A Lot To Learn About Spending Taxpayer Money 2 July 2009, 9:26 am
It's a now bit clearer why Congress was so pissed at corporate executives at bailed out institutions who used private jets to travel to their respective roasts. It wasn't because it was a misuse of taxpayer funds; it's because it was such a JV effort. During last year's financial meltdown, hundreds of lawmakers raided taxpayer coffers to the tune of $13 million for overseas travel. Among the critical issues that needed to be addressed in the midst of the crisis were:
-Senator Daniel Inouye's 4-...

Reading the Employment Report: Focus on Hours, Not Heads 2 July 2009, 9:23 am
The latest employment numbers are out, and they are dreadful. Those commentators who saw "green shoots" out there had been focusing on the fact that in May, the economy "only" shed 322,000 jobs, which is good news when compared with the fact that the economy had been losing over 600,000 jobs per month in January, February, and March. Squint hard enough at the black line in my chart, and you can see why many were hopeful that job losses were slowing down.
