Bajca's emoticon keyboard / jewelry-making kit might be emotionally unstable 19 November 2008, 3:14 pm
Be honest with yourself: you've always wanted a dedicated, 16-key emoticon keyboard with "keys" that pulled doubled duty as expressive jewelry, right? Well, you got it! Bajca's Smile Keypad aims to "make real the emoticon," and as far as we can tell, they've totally nailed it. The USB-friendly keyboard has classic smiley face-looking keys which pop out using some special tongs, then are popped into pieces of jewelry -- rings, bracelets, necklaces -- sky's the limit, apparently. It's not really ...

Giant International's touchscreen Intouch IT7150 photo frame: disembodied hand not included 19 November 2008, 2:48 pm
Not that we'd expect any reputable digital picture frame manufacturer to consort with a real, live hand model, but we've gotta hand it to Giant International for discovering this particularly unnatural, eerily glowing appendage to point vaguely at its new Intouch IT7150. Lucky for us, the device in question is not at all cheap and uninviting, featuring a 7-inch 800 x 480 LCD touchscreen, 802.11b/g WiFi, USB to PC connection cable and the standard complement of memory card slots. What makes this...

Nokia E71 finally coming to AT&T as E71x 19 November 2008, 1:39 pm
We've been hearing for ages that there was a super-special version of the E71 with an AT&T ROM floating around somewhere in Nokia's skunkworks, but solid evidence of its existence has been scarce to say the least; some said it was canceled, some said it was just taking its sweet time going through the testing process, and some put a hand over our mouth and told us never to speak "AT&T" and "E71" in the same sentence again lest an agent overhear us. New in-the-wild shots give us -- and t...

The crew over at Engadget HD was part of a tour of the Microsoft eHome lab and was lucky enough to catch the un-announced DirecTV HDPC-20 in testing. Unfortunately Microsoft wasn't ready to announce any new products and even reminded everyone that things in the lab don't always make it to market. Konica Minolta prepping thumbdrive-sized projector 19 November 2008, 11:04 am
It was inevitable, really. With outfits like Dell and 3M taking projectors to a whole 'nother (tiny) level, it was just a matter of time before someone else came along and made those pico projectors look gigantic. Enter Konica Minolta, who is reportedly developing a projector that's just 1.6- x 0.79- x 0.3-inches, or slightly smaller than your average flash drive. The unit will supposedly use lasers, mirrors and black magic instead of light bulbs and lenses, and it'll still be capable of beaming...

LG's fashionable Prada II (and watch) gets shown to the camera 19 November 2008, 10:32 am
Well, that didn't take long. Merely hours after LG's Prada II was treated to a dedicated microsite, along comes the hands-on photographs we've been expecting. CNET's UK branch was able to wrangle one in, and as predicted, the mobile didn't hesitate to pose for a few nice snapshots. Eagle-eyed readers will notice that it certainly put on a little heft since the first go 'round, but the slight downturn in attractivity is more than compensated by the inclusion of a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Casio EX-FH20 Budget Super Slow-Mo Camera Lightning Review [Reviews] 19 November 2008, 3:00 pm
The Gadget: The Casio EX-FH20 camera, bargain brother to the popular EX-F1. It features 1000 fps slow-mo video, a 40 fps burst mode for still shooting and a 9.1-megapixel sensor, as well as good ol' 720p at regular speeds, all for just over half the price of the original slow-mo star. The Price: $600 The Verdict: Casio did a great job of bringing the power of the EX-F1 down to a beginner's level for the EX-FH20. The functions on the new camera are more streamlined than its bulkier predecessor: m...

Roofus Robot Eats Snow For Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner [Robots] 19 November 2008, 2:40 pm
Roofus is a robot that can do the job of 25 men cleaning up snow. Which is great, because who wants to have a job in this economy? I mean, do you have caterpillar tracks, two electric motors, one petrol engine, capability to carry 550 pounds of snow on your back, remote control link, and your skin is shiny orange? If you said yes to any of these, you don't need a job shoveling snow. Go to the next available circus and/or government agency. Roofus also has a range finder system built-in. It doesn...

We've covered a few before, but since you guys keep uncovering examples of companies supplying you with gizmos in ridiculously voluminous packaging, we're building a new Hall of Shame to give these things a home, and embarrass the perpetrators. Dell Inspiron Mini 12 Review [Review] 19 November 2008, 1:50 pm
The Dell Inspiron Mini 12 is a bit confused. It packs an Intel Atom processor, which makes it a netbook. But it also has a 12-inch screen, which exceeds our definition of what a netbook can be. On one hand it's a natural evolution of the genre in an ever growing screen size arms race, topping the 10-inchers like a razor company adding another blade. On the other, the Inspiron Mini 12 reaches a size and pricepoint that makes it comparable to far more capable systems from Dell in the same priceran...

The Tech Specs of HD Netflix Streaming [Streaming] 19 November 2008, 12:20 pm
Hats off to Netflix. Without really being prompted, they've released their HD encoding/streaming specifications for the world to see. The company revealed that they originally considered a WMV3 (Windows Media Player 9) codec running at 4000kbps and 5500kbps, but opted instead for a similar Microsoft codec, the VC1AP running between 2600kbps and 3800kbps—which should provide a better experience for those of us with lower bandwidths. While Netflix offers 24fps movies in their native frames p...

BuildingPorn: The Dubai Skyline-in-Progress [Architecture] 19 November 2008, 12:00 pm
The Burj Dubai, the tallest building in the world, is at 160 stories and counting, with the tower due to be complete next September. But it's not the only tower under construction in Dubai, not by a longshot. No, the city appears to be sprouting up from the ground like a bunch of weeds, with as many cranes as buildings. And now, The Big Picture has nearly 30 amazing shots of the city in transition. Hit the jump for another of my favorites and then head over to The Big Picture for the rest. [The...

A firm slap to your own hindquarters (riding crop optional) delivers an additional boost via accelerometer detection. If you still have questions on how this whole thing works, why not let two lovely and tech-savvy ladies demonstrate for you in video form. The scen...

Windows 7 Touch Control Makes Media Center More Awesome [Windows 7] 19 November 2008, 11:44 am
Visiting Microsoft's Media Center posse in Redmond, I just caught a glimpse of the Windows 7 Media Center interface with integrated touch control (no third-party software) on an HP TouchSmart. All I can say is, I've always loved the MCE user experience—it really is a highlight of Microsoft design—but adding smooth touch interaction makes it even better. The only thing missing here is multitouch, but I'm told that's coming. Check out the vid. [Windows 7]

Hand over that Weather Bell, Missouri! 19 November 2008, 3:10 pm
Okay, so I know it has nothing to do with weather (for those into strange etymology, the "wether" part of the word "bellwether" actually comes from a term for a castrated sheep). In any case, Missouri's streak as the state most accurate in predicting the outcome of a presidential election appears to have ended. More than two weeks after Election Day, the Associated Press today declared John McCain the winner in Missouri, a hotly contested Republican-leaning state where McCain and President-el...

Nate interviews wingnut. Hilarity ensues. Missouri results were supposed to be finished yesterday, yet the outstanding counties (St. Louis City, St. Louis County, and Jackson still don't appear to have updated their results. Maybe today? This week? This year? Remember the documentary "Hoop Dreams"? The Trib follows up on the two subjects of the movie. One haunting line in that movie has always stuck with me: "People always say to me, 'when you get to the NBA, don't forget about me.' Well, I...

Hey, Senators! What happened to January? 19 November 2008, 1:15 pm
So you may have noticed, along with the rest of America, that the Senate Democratic Caucus voted yesterday to allow Joe Lieberman to retain his chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee. I think we're all in agreement on the fact that the vote did take place yesterday, correct? And that yesterday was November 18, 2008? Yes? Here's why I ask: Remember what Sherrod Brown told his constituents about this issue? I do not expect any changes to committee assignments until the beginning of ...

Signs And Portents On Health Care Reform 19 November 2008, 12:40 pm
It's not January 20th, yet. We don't have a new President (and not to disappoint David Letterman, he can't start early). But there are interesting things happening out there on health care reform that one should take notice of. To start off with, there's the Max Baucus white paper of general principles toward health reform. This put health reform front and center for debate and discussion even before the inaugural. Next was Ted Kennedy announcing health care working groups, including this: O...

Can they Invesco the Inauguration? 19 November 2008, 12:15 pm
With inauguration tickets pretty much unobtainable, Senator Dianne Feinstein, the California Democrat who is chairing the committee, said today that Congress was hoping to find some "creative" ways to accommodate more people because the demand for tickets is vastly outstripping the supply. Committee aides said they were looking at maps with the architects "and trying to see if more people can be squeezed in." The configuration will be slightly different from previous years. Whatever their s...

Since then, Barack Obama's margin of victory has grown from 5% to 7% and his vote total has swelled by 12.6 million (compared with 8.5 million for John McCain). The crazy thing is, it's still growing, bit by bit.

Layoffs Watch '08: Deutsche Bank 19 November 2008, 3:03 pm
Germans. What are they good for? Absolutely no-thin'. Deutsche Bank was supposed to be the one firm not falling off a cliff, not going bankrupt, not canceling its holiday party and not firing everyone to your left and right. And then, oh, what's that? The upped and canceled their holiday party on Friday, citing fear of looking bad rather than money trubs. And now they've announced they'll be firing one in seven traders from its global markets division. I wash my hands of these people....

Local National News Outfit Finds Green Green In Failed Fund 19 November 2008, 1:12 pm
The difficult part of this entry is the admission that we actually visited CNN Money, but we can't help but pass on the lunacy that is an article that find silver lining in a failed $11 billion hedge fund because it invested $32 million in wind power.
Last year, after Tontine purchased 49% of the company, Miscor did a 1-25 reverse split, sending its stock to the $5 range. By mid-January however, the stock had shot up to over $16, giving the fund a handsome 300% return on its money.

Short Termism Hits Berkshire (Or Does It?) 19 November 2008, 11:47 am
We couldn't help but snicker a bit at the news, reported via Bloomberg, that Berkshire Hathaway CDS costs have "almost tripled in two months." Bloomberg attributes the soaring CDS quote to a series of equity index puts Berkshire wrote some time ago. The puts have attracted a great deal of attention almost since their original sale, partly because of Buffett's often quoted (and seemingly hypocritical) analogy putting derivatives in the "financial weapons of mass destruction" category. (We pict...

Any Club That Would Have Me.... 19 November 2008, 10:56 am
It used to be that the Microsoft-Yahoo clash seemed, at its root, a "personality conflict." Or, that was the press version, anyhow. Around this time Microsoft spent a period in that Texas Hold'em sort of intentions limbo. When strong, attempt to appear weak, when weak, attempt to appear strong. Ballmer didn't want to adverti...

This is getting absurd and by absurd I mean the greatest thing to happen to Wall Street maybe ever. Friday, a clown. Today, Gene Simmons. Who could possibly be next? Obviously Gary Busey is my pick, but maybe not because invoking the Buse would mean the masterminds at the NYSE shooting their collective load and it's only November--we're not there yet. Really, you don't get much more full of yourself than this. All we can hope for (and we are really hoping believe me) is that somewhere out there, lurking in the shadows of a moderately priced weekend package for a not-quite-five-star hotel, there is an Ashley Dupre servicing the caped bonus crusader. I'm not too worried. He has become so Spitzerlike that it would be surprising if it was only this Spitz-feature that he lacked.
